美国乐队是70年代初期的一支民谣摇滚乐队，乐队的3名成员都是美国驻英空军军官的儿子。1971年他们推出了首支单曲《A Horse With No Name》，在英国排行榜上名列第三。乐队的吉他演奏清脆悦耳，被评论界称为”原声版的Crosby Still Nash and Young”。在乐队的首张同名专辑《America》中，他们继续保持了这种清新的风格。在英国大获成功后，乐队返回美国本土寻求发展。《A Horse With No Name》挤下Neil Young的新歌，冲上了排行榜的首位。1973年他们被格莱美音乐大奖评为”年度最佳新人”。他们在英美两地都大红大紫，但是这种热力很快就消散了， 1973年他们仅有一支单曲勉强打入了Billboard榜的前40名。1977年乐队推出《Harbor》之后，Dan Peek出于宗教信仰的考虑决定离开乐队，剩下的两名乐手仍然坚持录音，但美国乐队的鼎盛时期已告终止。
